Week 3 Materials

We encourage you to read and view the following materials to participate fully in the discussion!

Listen to Episode 3: The Birth of American Music from the podcast series 1619 (about 35 minutes)
  1. What are your general reactions to this podcast episode? How much of this is brand new information?
  2. Why is it important to recognize the monumental contributions of Black musicians? Why is this essential for best practice in music therapy?
  3. Continue assignment from prior sessions--try diversifying your playlists! If you have a specific population that fascinates you, ensure that music particular to this population includes music by Black, Latinex and other POC artists! This may feel silly or forced, but it is essential that in our learning we create an immersive experience of music from all backgrounds.
Read the article Black History Series Part 1: Learning Black History Through Music
  1. Check out a few of the lesson plans below the body of the article? Which ones catch your eye?
  2. How could these classroom lesson plan ideas be implemented in a Music Therapy session?
  3. How could introducing the context of the presented music create greater depth and growth in the therapeutic experience?
Watch this video “The Problem with Cancel Culture” by Ayishat Akanbi  (about 5 minutes)
  1. What are your initial thoughts and responses to this video?
  2. How have you participated in Cancel Culture--and we all have in some way, shape, or form!
  3. How does Cancel Culture tie to that discussion on white guilt and “wokeness” as discussed in prior discussions?
  4. What are some actions we can commit to to foster a culture of humility and growth over canceling out individuals?
